By Nachiketh Bhattathiri | In: Marine Navigation | Last Updated on May 4, 2016
Back in the old days of merchant shipping, the ‘Quarter Master’ was a vital member of the Bridge team. ‘Quarter Master’ was the title given to the able bodied seamen whose primary responsibility was to steer the ship according to the Master’s and Officer’s helm orders. Quarter Masters kept watches and took turns on the helm all day when at sea. This practise continued until automation took over in the field of navigation. The significance of Quarter Master almost vanished off when the revolutionary equipment ‘Auto-Pilot’ was invented. It was during the early 1920’s when an automated steering and helm control system was introduced onboard merchant ships.
Auto-Pilot system is considered as one of the most advanced and technically sophisticated navigational equipment tools on ships. Auto-Pilot is synchro... less

... moreSpotted: Norwegian Escape Flaunts World’s Biggest Scrubber Systems
In today’s spotted we bring you what is deemed to be the world’s biggest scrubber system, which has been installed aboard the Norwegian Cruise Lines’ newest cruise vessel Norwegian Escape.
Yara Marine Technologies’ five SOx scrubber systems, installed aboard the largest cruise ship in Norwegian Cruise Lines’s fleet, make the ship more environmentally-friendly.
The inline scrubber is designed as a solution to fight air pollution at sea, with a capacity to clean emissions from 76.8 MW engine power. An inline scrubber is basically a “gas washing machine,” a simple cylinder that replaces the silencer of a ship engine and cleans the exhaust gas, reducing SOx emissions by up to 99%, Yara Marine said.
M/V Norwegian Escape can carry up to 4,248 passengers and 1,731 crew members. Diesel consumption at full cruising load is about 11 tons per hour, fueling an engine capacity equiva... less

IMB: Threat To Seafarers Remains Despite Piracy Clampdown
Kidnapping and hostage-taking persists off the coasts of West Africa and South East Asia, despite a 20-year low in piracy on the world’s seas, according to new figures from the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau (IMB).
IMB’s latest global piracy report shows that pirates armed with guns or knives took 110 seafarers hostage in the first nine months of 2016, and kidnapped 49 crew for ransom. Nigeria, a growing hotspot for violent piracy and armed robbery, accounts for 26% of all captures, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

But with just 42 attacks worldwide this quarter, maritime piracy is at its lowest since 1996. IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre (IMB PRC) has recorded 141 incidents so far this year, a 25% drop from the same period in 2015. A total of 111 vessels were boarded, five were hijacked, 10 were fired at, and a further 15 attacks wer... less

By MI News Network | In: Shipping News | Last Updated on November 1, 2016
3D printing will cause so much turmoil in the ship building and shipping industry until 2050 that the industry has to change their approach towards designing and building ships completely. This is the conclusion of NISS (National Institute for Shipping and Shipbuilding), that has developed a blue print for the maritime sector until 2050. Geert Schouten, director at Shipbuilder, was part of the team responsible for this blueprint. Schouten: “3D printing is moving at a rapid pace. It is now possible to, wherever a product is required, to print it on site. Even ships will be partly 3D printed in the future.”

“The combination 3D printing, digitalization and robotization is developing very fast”, continues Schouten. “Others sectors are moving ahead quite fast already, so I expect some trendsetters to stand up... less

MacGregor to slash global headcount
October 25th, 2016 Sam Chambers Europe, Operations 0 comments
Around 260 staff working for ship equipment manufacturer MacGregor face the chop as parent Cargotec from Finland goes about a EUR25m cost cutting exercise.
“MacGregor’s market situation is challenging,” Cargotec noted in a release today. “In the offshore industry, the low price of oil keeps investments at an unprecedentedly low level, which affects the demand for offshore load handling solutions. The demand for service has declined as parts from decommissioned ships are increasingly being used as spare parts. There is overcapacity on global merchant ship markets, and orders for new vessels are at an exceptionally low level, which decreases the demand for MacGregor’s products and solutions.”
Michel van Roozendaal, president of MacGregor, commented: “As a result of these difficult but necessary actions MacGregor will become more agile.” less

Masterless ships may become reality within a very short period of time. Now, the Danish Maritime Authority is launching a pre-study on autonomous ships together with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
The technology for unmanned ships is coming, but it is not yet known precisely where, when and to which extent. However, now a step is taken in the right direction as the Danish Maritime Authority – together with the DTU – is initiating a pre-study on autonomous ships. The purpose of the Danish Maritime Authority’s cooperation with the DTU is, firstly, to increase the common knowledge base and to set the preliminary frames so that the development and use of unmanned ships can come about in an appropriate manner.

LNG, termed as the fuel of the future, is also growing in popularity as a marine fuel. Studies have shown that LNG reduces Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions by about 90 per cent while Sulphur Oxide (SOx) and particulates emissions are negligible. LNG engines also reduce CO2 emissions by 25 to 30 percent in general, compared to diesel or heavy fuel oil powered vessels.
With the present market value of LNG in commercially viable regions such as the US and Europe, LNG could be offered at a competitive price when compared to heavy fuel oil or HFO and even more attractive when compared to the low-sulphur gas oil, as fuel on ships.
Considering the importance of LNG as marine fuel, almost all major shipping companies have already launched LNG powered commercial vessels, while others are also preparing for the same.

Egypt has reportedly issued a new tender looking to secure the delivery of 96 cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2017-2018.
There is an additional 12 cargoes option included in the tender document, however, as sources told Reuters, Egypt Natural Gas Holding may not award the optional cargoes.
It is claimed to be the largest mid-term tender ever issued, the report shows.
The rules for the latest tender have been changed as the window in which Egypt has to pay for the delivered cargo has been extended from 90 to between 120 and 180 days.
Late last year, Egypt was reported to have issues with LNG payments, seeking the extension of payment period from 15 to 90 days.
Payments under the 90-day terms began in January this year, and the latest tender shows that the payment terms have again been amended. less

AMSA has issued Marine Notice in order to advise vessel owners, operators and seafarers of AMSA’s approach to implementing the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) requirements for the maximum continuous period that a seafarer can serve on board a vessel without taking leave. It also outlines how these requirements will be enforced by AMSA during MLC, 2006 more detailed inspections.
MLC, 2006 entered into force both in Australia and internationally on 20 August 2013. Since that time, AMSA has incorporated MLC, 2006 inspections within port State control (PSC) inspection regime.
AMSA inspectors continue to identify occurrences of continuous seafarer service periods extending well beyond 11 months. While AMSA has received complaints in relation to these occurrences, in some cases the crew members have subsequently agreed to additional service extensions. Maersk Drilling swings the axe as 9 of 23 rigs lay idle

Maersk Drilling is downsizing its workforce announcing 70 jobs are being cut from its headquarters.
The cuts are a response to the continued market decline and reduced activity level in the oil industry the company said.
Claus V Hemmingsen, CEO of Maersk Drilling, commented: “The combination of low activity levels and excess capacity of drilling rigs continue to drive lower utilisation and lower day rates. At present, nine out of Maersk Drilling’s 23 units are lying idle, and we expect the market balance to be challenged in the coming years. As a consequence, we have had to say goodbye to more than 600 offshore employees in the last 12 months.”

Procedure for Ship Familiarization for New Crew Members on Ships
New crew members joining a ship must be familiarized with their duties and important information about the ship. This is to ensure that the new people onboard ship understand their responsibilities thoroughly before commencing their duties.
It is the duty of the master of the ship to ensure that each new crew member is given proper familiarization training to ensure personal safety and well-being of the ship.
The master would designate a qualified person in charge of training the new crew members of the ship.
Though all crew personnel joining the ship have to do STCW training, there are several specific instructions, which are important for safe operations on ships.

1. Suspension of Seafarers’ Certificate of Competency
Sometimes knowingly or unknowingly seafarers perform actions which results in the suspension of their certificate of competency (COC). When a seafarer is found guilty of any unlawful activity, the concerned authority has got full rights to temporary or permanently suspend seafarer’s COC. By KaranC | In: Guidelines | Last Updated on July 21, 2016
Dry dock is like a routine health check up for ships so that they live a long and healthy life. Dry dock schedule of every ship is laid down by the administration and every ship owner and operator has to follow the rules.
As much important it is to check conditions required for entering a dry dock, so much important it is to consider checks need to be done before the dock is flooded and ship is taken out of the dry dock. Let’s find out the exact procedure to be followed on a ship coming out of the dry dock.
It is extremely important to maintain a checklist of things and procedure to be done before undocking and not to miss any vital point which will lead to delay in undocking.
Following things must be checked by a responsible engineer and deck officers before water is filled up in the dock:

By Anish | In: Main Engine | Last Updated on November 22, 2016
On ships, the work done by marine engines to keep the plant running for propelling a ship requires burning of fuel. The energy converted inside the cylinder of the engine is not 100% efficient conversion as part of it is lost in the form of exhaust gases.
The modern exhaust gas system of marine engines is designed in such a way that the unused gases coming out of the cylinders are further directed to turbocharger and exhaust gas boiler to recover most of the waste energy from the same.
Components for the Exhaust Gas system of Engine:
To utilise the maximum energy from the waste gases, the exhaust gas system of marine engine is provided with the following components:

It is a natural human desire to build things bigger, faster and stronger then what came before. In the military world, this adage has held true over the centuries as various nations and states sought to build the biggest militaries with the strongest weaponry. Perhaps nowhere is this competitive nature more evident than in the navies of the various countries. Having a numerically large navy is a symbol of wealth and power. It also reflects that nation’s ability to influence the rest of the world or impose its will on others. With the introduction of airpower, nuclear weapons and space technology throughout the 20th Century, the role of the navy changed somewhat. That said, a capable navy remains an important tool to move your forces around the world, control an area of water or send a political message to another state.

Fake representatives of real shipping companies are preying on unemployed seafarers
By Humans At Sea -
October 18, 2016
Recently, one of my former students almost became a victim of a scam targeting seafarers with offers of employment at ridiculously high wages and with generous benefits. Even in good times, 4.580 GBP per month for a 3rd officer position with 3.500 GBP travel allowance would be incredibly tempting – so, with severe wage pressure now everywhere, even very alert seafarers may be tempted to follow up on such an offer.
The scam starts off more or less benignly – a contract is sent over! But, unlike typical employment offers, this one does not involve any sort of screening. Miraculously, the candidate has already been accepted for the position, all he needs to do is sign and send the contract back. The deadline for this? Suspiciously short: one week, maybe even less.

Types of Lifeboat Release Mechanisms & SOLAS Requirements for Lifeboats
By Anish | In: Maritime Law | Last Updated on May 6, 2016
There are different types of lifeboats used on board a ship on the basis of the type of ship and other special requirements. Not all the lifeboats have the same type of releasing mechanisms, for the launching of a lifeboat depends on several other factors. In this article we will take a look at the main types of lifeboat releasing mechanisms and also learn about the SOLAS requirements for lifeboats.
Types of lifeboat releases: On load and off load release.
There are two types of lifeboat releasing mechanisms- on load and off load. These mechanisms release the boat from the davit, which is attached to a wire or fall by means of a hook. By releasing the hook the lifeboat can be set free to propel away from the ship.

8 Important Points For Inspection and Maintenance of Ship’... more8 Important Points For Inspection and Maintenance of Ship’s Engine Room Crane
By Anish | In: Marine Technology | Last Updated on October 8, 2016
Whether it’s overhauling of main engine/ machinery or shifting of heavy parts, the engine room crane is regularly used for “heavy-duty” jobs, which are usually beyond the physical capabilities of the engine room crew.
Th engine room personnel are qualified to operate the crane in a safe manner but as a machinery, the crane is subjected to breakdowns if proper maintenance and care is not taken. The scenario can be worse if the crane fails in the middle of lifting the load or while carrying out important machinery overhauling.
As a responsible officer on ship, the engineers using the crane must do regular inspection and scheduled maintenance to ensure the crane works safely without giving up at all times.
The engine room crane has a Safe Working Load (SWL) limit, which should never be crossed at all times. The crane ... less

DNV GL Certifies Germany’s First Accommodation Platform For Offshore Wind Farms
By MI News Network | In: Shipping News | Last Updated on November 8, 2016
DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, has awarded Vattenfall with a final statement of compliance for its offshore accommodation platform. This is the first offshore platform in the North Sea to host up to 50 operation and maintenance staff members working at the nearby DanTysk offshore wind farm. As the offshore wind farm is 90km away from the nearest harbour, project developer Vattenfall designed the unique offshore structure to enable staff to live independently close to the wind farm without any outside support for up to three weeks.
The offshore wind accommodation platform sets unique challenges to the certification process. As required for all German offshore sites, the certification was carried out according to the requirements of the German Federal Maritime... less
