Today we present to our readers the "black list", or rather, the complete database of ships that in violation of the Ukrainian legislation and the international sanctions, docked at the ports of the occupied Crimea since its annexation, i.e. from March 18, 2014 to August 15, 2016.
In the next few days we will also offer you a series of analytical materials concerning the database: the monitoring group has analyzed the database of the offenders in accordance with the types of ships, types of cargo, ports of call and response to international sanctions, as well as tracked the processes of changing the flags and the owners and so o... less

The container equipment index price at the end of 2015 was $1,450 per CEU equivalent (or 20ft standard), down from $1,900 a year earlier. The average price for the year was $1,750, down 15% on 2014 and by the end of 2015 the index had fallen close to the all-time low of 2001-02.
“Some of the recent price fall has resulted from the weakening state of the global economy and the decline in trade demand,” said Drewry’s lead analyst for container equipment Andrew Foxcroft. “Drewry is forecasting a further possible fall in the overall price for 2016, as it dipped briefly to $1,300 by the second quarter.” By end-2015, the new-for-old replacement cost of the global box fleet was down to $77 billion, ... less

Every engineer on ship knows the importance of oily water separator (OWS) and must have heard stories of legal actions taken against seafarers who tried to fiddle or bypass the automation system of the OWS.
The most common cause of people tempering with oily water separator is deterioration of performance of the system.
Apart from the filter getting clogged due to continuous usage, there can be many other reasons for the lack of performance.
A few critical points, which are often ignored and less commonly known to engineers operating oily water separator on daily basis, are discussed in this article to ensure efficient performance of oily water separator (coalesce filter type) used onboard ships:
1. Oil In Bilge: The separator is suitable for separating small quantity of oil in bilge and not the other way round. If there is a mixture consisting of small quantity of water in oil, better not to pass it though the O... less

Dynamic Positioning is a very vital cog in a vessel’s operation which is mainly dedicated for offshore activities such oil exploration. Dynamic positioning systems require specially trained and skilled personnel to handle the systems at sea.
The person who mans the entire system and ensures the smooth functioning of a DP vessel is known as a DP operator. The dynamic positioning operator (DPO) needs to be trained appropriately before taking up the reins of the demanding profession. Several maritime institutes offer a recognised course in dynamic position systems successfully aiding individuals to gain the requisite knowledge. Know more about the various DP courses providers in Asia.

Income Tax Department of India started sending notices to seafarers asking them to pay taxes on income earned on both foreign and Indian flagged ships.
The notices were a result of a recent Income Tax tribunal judgement from Kolkata which required merchant navy personnel to pay taxes. According to the judgement, seafarers may have to pay around 30% tax on their income. Worse still, the IT department can raise a tax demand on income of last six years as well.

Until now, merchant navy personnel who spent more than six months at sea enjoyed similar benefits to non-resident Indians. These benefits have been received by seafarers for decades.
The judgement will affect thousands of merchant navy personnel, India being one of the largest suppliers of crew to global merchant navy fleet.

The UK Ship Register has signed its first-ever unmanned vessel to the flag, showing how it is adapting to the changes of the maritime industry.
ASV’s C-Worker 7 will be used for work such as subsea positioning, surveying and environmental monitoring. It can be used under direct control, semi-manned or completely unmanned.
Although such autonomous vessels are now being introduced to many fleets in both commercial and military sectors across the world, they are still relatively new in the maritime sector.
Doug Barrow, Director UK Ship Register said: ‘By supporting emerging technologies such as autonomous systems, we are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of the global maritime industry.
‘The UK Flag is growing, as we have invested in resources to meet the demands of that growth. We have the support of the UK Government, and the wider UK maritime industries to continue our expansion.

Being a deck officer of a ship involves myriad responsibilities that are spread across the different aspects of the vessel’s operation. It is a challenging job wherein the responsible person has to ensure that the ship is navigating safely on the correct path and complying with all the navigational rules i.e. Rules of the Road (ROR). Not only is the safe navigation the prime responsibility but it’s documentation also holds equal importance to lend credibility as well as accountability to the task being executed.
It can be said that as far as the navigation of the ship is concerned, the safety of the ship’s staff is solely in the hands of navigating deck officer (also termed the Officer Of The Watch) and the assistance rendered in carrying out his duties by another crew member on the bridge. An agile watch by these people ensures that the ship is never in an emergency situation such as collision, grounding etc. that expose... less

T... moreUnderstanding Hot And Cold Corrosion In Marine Engines
The profit earned by the shipping companies does not solely depend on the cargo they are entitled to carry. In fact, a significant portion of the profit is achieved from the savings in operational costs, which enable the ship owners to provide competitive price for carrying cargo.
As everyone knows, one of the major operating costs for running a ship from Port X to Port Y is the fuel oil. And for the same reason, companies are doing everything possible to cut fuel costs to the minimum using techniques such as slow steaming with low-grade fuels.
However, the fuel oils that are used to run the marine engines also adversely affect the engine parts (due to the naturally occurring elements present in them) if not burnt efficiently.
Corrosion is a primary concern on ships when it comes to burning heavy fuel oil in the marine engines. It can be further described as:
Hot Corrosion: It occurs due to the presence of Vanadium (Va) and Sodium (Na) i... less

The quality of air present onboard is of vital importance to both ship’s crew and its machinery systems. Most of the ship’s systems use air for operation in one or the other way. Quality of air intake by ship’s machinery systems play a major role in deciding the performance and maintenance criteria of the machine.
In this article we have provided a general overview about ten harmful effects of impure air on ship’s machinery systems:
1. Poor Ventilation Harms Machinery: The engine room ventilation is the main consumer of intake air for all machinery systems located inside it. If the intake air is of poor quality, the performance of machinery systems can be severely affected. Special care must be taken especially in dry dock when blasting of hull is carried out. Precautions should also be taken while loading cargo with abrasive dust as ventilation fans will suck dust inside the engine... less
