The merchant navy is a profession that is by far away from the need to have a permanent legal counsel for the benefit of the employees. And obviously, as the topic suggests, the ones in concern here are the ones working onboard (as opposed to the office). Professional life onboard is strictly work oriented with less to minimum chances to give rise to situations that might demand legal proceedings.
In general, the culture on ship is to solve matters within the periphery of the ship, amicably and respectfully. The Master is normally enough by himself to solve issues that require specific and serious attention. However, as with all workplaces, there sometimes arises a situation that just cannot be solved through the honor of a good handshake and an apology; sometimes, a seafarer has no option but to turn to full fledged authorities dedicated towards the disputes pertaining to the life in the merchant navy.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has welcomed the entry into force of new obligations under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006) which require shipowners to have compulsory insurance to cover abandonment of seafarers, as well as claims for death or long-term disability of seafarers.
The 2014 amendments to the MLC 2006, which comes under the auspices of the International Labour Organization (ILO), are based on guidelines which were developed by a joint IMO/ILO working group, which reported to both IMO’s Legal Committee and ILO’s governing bodies.

AMSA has issued Marine Notice in order to advise vessel owners, operators and seafarers of AMSA’s approach to implementing the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) requirements for the maximum continuous period that a seafarer can serve on board a vessel without taking leave. It also outlines how these requirements will be enforced by AMSA during MLC, 2006 more detailed inspections.
MLC, 2006 entered into force both in Australia and internationally on 20 August 2013. Since that time, AMSA has incorporated MLC, 2006 inspections within port State control (PSC) inspection regime.
AMSA inspectors continue to identify occurrences of continuous seafarer service periods extending well beyond 11 months. While AMSA has received complaints in relation to these occurrences, in some cases the crew members have subsequently agreed to additional service extensions. 1. Suspension of Seafarers’ Certificate of Competency
Sometimes knowingly or unknowingly seafarers perform actions which results in the suspension of their certificate of competency (COC). When a seafarer is found guilty of any unlawful activity, the concerned authority has got full rights to temporary or permanently suspend seafarer’s COC. Every seafarer should therefore know the reasons which can lead to suspension of his COC and his career at the sea.

18. 10. 2016 - SEAFARERS JOURNAL. Началась кампания «SOS 2020 Campaign To Save UK Seafarer Jobs», целью которой является повлиять на сокращение числа британских моряков среди рядового состава.
Как отмечают эксперты, с 2011 года число британских моряков рядового состава упало на четверть, а общее их количество сократилось на 13%. Также наблюдается старение профессии, поскольку средний возраст более половины рядового состава превышает 40 лет.
Специалисты прогнозируют, что через четыре года тысячи британских моряков выйдут на пенсию, но в настоящее время замена им не готовится. Предполагается, что такая негативная статистика может повлиять на экономику страны, а также на уровень профессионализма местных моряков.
